Research suggests there is a significant link between oral health and systemic diseases including heart disease, diabetes, bacterial pneumonia and low birth weight babies. Oral infections, especially periodontal disease (gum disease), are caused by bacteria found in dental plaque. While this bacteria primarily exists in and around your gums, scientists believe the bacteria can enter your bloodstream and can either increase the chances of heart disease or diabetes or cause additional damage in the event you already have one of those conditions.

Receiving proper treatment if you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease is imperative to your overall health. To learn more about treatments for periodontal disease, click here.
